Bikes4Freedom was founded by Dutch entrepreneur Roderick van Zuijlen van Nijevelt, inspired by a simple belief: mobility creates opportunity and reduces poverty.

Roderick grew up in the Netherlands, where bicycles are a part of everyday life. Through his connection with Namibia and its communities, he realised that what is ordinary in one country can be truly life-changing in another.

That insight became the foundation of Bikes4Freedom.

Today, millions of people around the world face mobility poverty—a hidden barrier that limits access to education, employment, healthcare, and economic opportunity. In rural Namibia, children often walk long distances to school, workers spend hours travelling to their jobs, and families struggle to reach essential services.

A bicycle changes that.

By reducing travel time by 4, increasing carrying capacity by 3, and expanding the distance by 3, people can travel safely and affordably. A bicycle creates opportunities that extend far beyond transportation: it helps children stay in school, enables adults to earn an income, improves access to healthcare, and strengthens entire communities.

Bikes4Freedom gives high-quality suitable bicycles from the Netherlands a meaningful second life. Together with trusted local partners in Namibia, we transport, repair, distribute, and maintain every bicycle through a network of community-based Bike Shops. These Bike Shops provide professional repairs, affordable sales, cycling education, and local employment, creating sustainable businesses that continue to serve their communities long after the bicycles arrive.
